Stop 3: Liberty Bell
Historical Liberty Bell: Welcome to Philadelphia, your third stop, home of the Liberty Bell! The liberty bell is very important to the revolution, because it was used to bring in the townspeople of Philadelphia to hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. It has many quotes engraved in it, including "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof," from William Pen's charter 50th anniversary. The liberty bell was used to call in the townspeople of Philadelphia to hear about special announcements and events, and to call the Assembly together.
Modern Day: The Liberty Bell is open twenty-four hours a day. Every fourth of July, the descendants of the signers of the Declaration tap on the Liberty Bell thirteen times, to represent the thirteen original colonies. Over the years, the bell developed a crack. The cause is unknown, but there are many theories, including that it broke while ringing during George Washington's Birthday.
